My friend Julie was always up for an adventure with me and many of our adventures started at the Neenah Public Library where we found music, coffee demos, history talks and the stories for Short Story Night. Short Story Night became really important to us during the pandemic because librarian Richie Zaboroske made it available on line through zoom. Four of us would gather in one apartment, have pizza delivered and log on to the event which Richie broadcast from his basement. We would come prepared having read the story via a link from the library and be joined by 5 or 6 others for a discussion. After quarantine was over, we continued to attend Short Story Night at Lion’s Tail

A story from September of 2024 became a favorite of ours: “The Narrows” by John Jodizio. We laughed at the absurdity of parts of the story and often talked about the ingenious solution to the problem of suicide. I even had a “Man Hook” of sorts and brought that with me on one of my visits. More laughter!

Julie had a lot of health problems and went into hospice in February of 2025. I was able to visit regularly and always brought the current short story for her to read. The week before Julie died, I brought “The Narrows” with me and read it to her. We were able to laugh and discuss the story once more.

I miss Julie and cherish the memories that Short Story Night made possible. Thank you Neenah Public Library and Richie Zaboboske, Librarian.
