hoopla Service Change

press release

If you use hoopla through the Neenah Public Library, you will experience a service change beginning on March 1, 2025.

Due to the increasing popularity of hoopla, we are implementing a budget cap on our hoopla service.  The daily cap means that, once the library’s costs meet a set amount, patrons will not be able to check out any more items on hoopla until the next day.  This cap will allow us to provide continued access to hoopla for all library patrons.

We realize hoopla is a popular service with our patrons who enjoy checking out and downloading ebooks, audiobooks, graphic novels, streaming videos, and music.  We love offering hoopla to our patrons and will continue to do so.  To make the service sustainable within the Neenah Public Library’s budget, we need to set this new daily budget cap.

To understand the reason for the new limits, it is important to understand how hoopla works.  Libraries offering hoopla pay a fee for each item a patron checks out.  Prices vary for each item, but generally, an ebook or audiobook costs $3, while movies and music cost $1.50.  Each checkout averages around $2.30, and in 2024 a total of 24,179 items were checked out.  As use continues to rise, and budgets do not keep up with demand, we have had to make this tough decision.

We understand that setting up a daily budget may inconvenience users, however, it is necessary in order to keep this resource available for our community.

Services like these are greatly enhanced by donations. If you would like to donate to the library, please visit: https://neenahlibrary.org/donate.
