Eleven-year-old Dessa Dean lives with her father, a hunter and trapper, in a remote wilderness area.  Dessa Dean is so traumatized by her mother’s death that she cannot leave their cabin.  It is nearly  Christmas, but Dessa Dean has nearly given up on ever being happy again.  Suddenly, a huge fudge-colored dog bounds into Dessa’s life.  Can Dessa Dean find happiness and contentment again?
