Reading

Fox Cities Reads is happy to announce that, Stella by Starlight, by best-selling author Sharon Draper has been selected for the 2017 Read, which is a one book, one community reading program.  Readers are encouraged to pick up a copy of the book and participate in discussions and events leading up to the author’s visit to the Fox Cities on April 4th & 5th, 2017.

When a burning cross set by the Ku Klux Klan causes panic and fear in 1932 Bumblebee, North Carolina, fifth-grader Stella must face prejudice and find the strength to demand change in her segregated town.  Stella by Starlight gives readers of all ages the opportunity to engage with one another and explore issues of prejudice and discrimination.  As a child, Draper’s grandmother, Estelle, would sneak out of her home to write under the stars, leaving Sharon her treasured journal, which along with her own father, was the inspiration behind the book.
